Reviewing Toys for German Shepherds: Rating Balls Based on Tennis Ball Durability
As a German shepherd owner, I know firsthand how important it is to find durable toys that can withstand the strong jaws and playful nature of these intelligent and energetic dogs. In this post, I'll be reviewing some of the best toys for German shepherds, with a special focus on balls and how they compare to the durability of a standard tennis ball.
Rating Balls Based on Tennis Ball Durability
Tennis balls are a classic toy for dogs of all breeds, but they're notorious for not lasting very long, especially with larger, more powerful breeds like German shepherds. In my experience, a tennis ball typically lasts around 10 minutes of play before it splits in half and doesn't work well as a ball anymore.
To compare, I tested several different types of balls marketed for large breeds like German shepherds and rated them based on how long they lasted compared to a tennis ball. Here are my findings:
KONG Flexball
- This rubber ball with a hollow center and it can withstand even the most enthusiastic chewers. My dog has been playing with this for over 6 months and although it is dirty, it doesn't show much wear, making it a great investment for German shepherd owners. The dog will squish it flat and pops back into shape quickly.
After 6 months of play at the dog park it's just dirtyChuckit! Ultra Ball - This high-bouncing ball is made of durable rubber and can withstand rough play and even water. It lasts about a week of supervised fetch play, but overall it's a great option for German shepherds who love to fetch.
Chuckit! Ultra Squeaker Ball - This ball combines the durability of the Chuckit! Ultra Ball with the added fun of a squeaker. My dog can pop the squeaker out in under 5 minutes. Replacement squeakers Those squeakers can be forced into the ball. This takes some strength to do but then the ball will squeak again making the dog so happy. This lasts about a week before the rubber starts to separate, but it's still a great option for German shepherds who love to fetch and play with squeaky toys.
4. Barrett ball small Fits well in the medium chuckit. This solid rubber ball has lasted over 8 months of German Shepherd play time. This ball will bounce a long time and doesn't show any signs of wear.
5. Barrett ball medium This 1.5 lbs of solid rubber makes Darling so happy. She will happily catch it out of the air during fetch and at the dog park she doesn't need to compete for the ball because most of the other dogs can't even pick it up. This ball has lasted over 6 months without showing any wear.
Overall, these are some of the best toys I have come across for my dog.
